A Note from our Founder

Dearest New families in our fold,

Every year we start the year with a welcome and orientation to the parents. In the culture of our school it is always parents who come first after the summer break to the school and to the classroom before the children. And I can tell you that the children don’t like it very much. They often ask their parents - "Why are you going to school on the first day instead of me?" And we begin with all of us coming together in Arangam - Our amphitheatre space in the Grade School and the Large Room in the Kindergarten. It is always with the lighting of the lamp and singing by the teachers to invite the forces of the spirit world to guide us and bless us through the year. And there is also some joyful singing together followed by our sharing of what awaits us that particular year. And then we go into the classes carefully prepared by the class teachers and kindergarten teachers with lots of love. There are usually some artistic activities, beautiful sharing by the teachers, some preparation by the parents for the children and in those rooms one can feel the excitement of a new year and the joy of community. Most teachers ask their parents to leave their hopes, intentions and dreams for their children on the wall or in a jar. This is the air the children breathe in, when they come to school on their very first day. And it is a beautiful ceremony that happens every year. It is this time that we welcome the new families into our fold.”

I close with a remark that I have heard every year from so many new parents - at some point into the year - "Joining Yellow Train is not just exciting for my child - but so exciting for us as a family. And coming to school is something we look forward to, as much as our children." May these feelings be true for each one of you too. And let us all celebrate the magic of childhood.

Santhya Vikram – Founder, The Yellow Train School
