Beauty in Nature

Why do we need Art? Why do we teach it at school?
Sometimes the world and life itself seem overwhelming but through Art we can always see and create beauty. Art depicts the beauty of the extraordinary but it also shows the beauty of the simple things that are all around us.
Showing the beauty of the simple things was our mission as we ventured out of the school building and into the farm that provides a home for us on so many hours each day. We all decided on one object and made quick sketches, no eraser allowed, creation not destruction. In our next lesson we transferred our sketches onto big sheets, taking time to remember the beauty we saw and then to give it colour, colours that represent our individual impressions on the beauty of the object.

  1. Corinna, what a beautiful exercise to trigger that sense of wonder and awe. As a child, I remember wondering how God was such a symmetric, creative artist – and more often than not, it would happen only when I would sit and sketch his creations! Thanks for this post – looking forward to more such slices of life amidst the greens, the blue and the myriad colours!
